V-Rings

V-Rings

The V-Ring has 3 functional parts consisting of the body, the hinge (connection between the body and the lip) and the tapered lip. They are designed for use on shafts to protect both bearings and Oil Seals and provide a reliable seal against dust, dirt and water splashes etc.

They are easy to fit and take up very little space within the application. We offer these in a wear-resistant Nitrile, that can withstand temperatures of up to 100 degrees Celsius and Viton that can withstand temperatures of up to 180 degrees Celsius. The Viton also provides a good resistance to aggressive environments and chemicals. An anti-friction grade of Nitrile is also available with our two most popular sizes being Types A and S.

V-rings are more or less the same as O-rings but with a different design. They are fully moulded rubber seals with a unique V-shaped cross section that mounts directly on a shaft. The ring’s purpose is to prevent the entry of dirt, dust and other contaminants from entering equipment or machinery. The seals also keep the equipment’s lubricants and other fluids from leaking.

V-rings are extremely effective and feature in hydraulic and pneumatic equipment. Although a small component of a larger system, you cannot underestimate the essence of choosing the right V-ring for your application. The wrong choice can decrease performance, increase wear and tear and increase the chances of product failure.

V-rings comprise the body and the flexible, self-tightening, sealing lip. Because of their ability to seal with larger misalignments, V-rings are considered more reliable and cost-effective sealing solutions for many applications.

TFC is a leading supplier of sealing solutions, offering an extensive range of rubber seals, including O-rings and V-rings. We partner with leading rubber seal manufacturers to deliver high-quality rubber seals that meet the highest international standards. We can supply V-rings in C-Class standards or help clients design, obtain prototypes and transition into manufacture and supply of customised V-rings for their specific applications.

Benefits and Advantages of Using V-rings

V-rings present various unique properties and benefits when matched to the right application and requirements. The most significant is how effective they are at preventing contamination and leakage, extending the lifespan of equipment and reducing maintenance costs substantially.

V-rings are easier to install than other types of seals, requiring no special tools or training. They are also highly versatile, providing effective sealing solutions across multiple industries. They fit in dynamic and static sealing applications, and the rings can accommodate various shaft sizes and materials.

V-rings are highly durable and long-lasting, even in demanding applications and harsh operating conditions. The rings can withstand high pressure, temperature, and exposure to chemicals and other corrosive substances. The impressive durability of V-rings reduces the need for frequent replacement, saving time and operating costs.

Where replacement or installation is necessary, it’s easy for technicians to replace or install the rings without any special tools.

Finally, V-ring materials are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. They do not contain harmful substances nor release any pollutants or contaminants into the environment, which is a massive plus for industries with strict environmental policies and those keen on observing green practices.

Types of V-ring Profiles

Maximising the performance of V-rings requires selecting the right profile and size of the seal. They come in four standard types, which you can find at TFC. Each profile has a unique design and is suitable for specific sealing applications.

  • VA: This is the most common V-ring profile available. It comes in various diameters starting from 2.7mm and up. The profile is versatile and suitable for unlimited applications. It provides good sealing properties and handles misalignments and eccentricities with ease.
  • VS: The VS profile provides a stronger radial hold on the shaft but requires more space because of its wider cross-section. This V-ring profile comes in shaft diameters ranging from 4.5mm to 210mm. This profile is perfect for applications requiring a stronger hold on the shaft.
  • VL: This profile is ideal for applications with limited space. Unlike the VS profile, VL has a thinner cross-section, allowing it to fit in tight spaces at the expense of the strength of the VS profile. It comes in shaft diameters ranging from 135mm to 630mm.
  • VE: The VE profile is designed for heavy-duty applications requiring a large diameter seal to keep out dirt and water. It’s common in rolling, paper mills, and other applications with large axial movements. The profile range comes in shaft diameters ranging from 4450mm to 2000mm and can be supplied with additional radial retaining bands for better installation.

Like our O-rings selection, V-rings are also made from different types of rubber, which can influence your choice of V-rings depending on several factors and tolerances for V-rings. Commonly used materials used to make the rings include:

  • Nitrile rubber
  • Chloroprene rubber
  • Hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber
  • Fluoroelastomer V-rings
  • Ethylene propylene diene monomer V-rings
  • Metal V-rings
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene V-rings
